Review The Last Portal Jumper
Hey everyone! I just finished reading The Last Portal Jumper (Book 2), and wow, what a ride! If you're a fan of LitRPG and those satisfying progression fantasy stories packed with action, then you absolutely need to check this one out. I had a blast reading it, and I'm already itching to get my hands on the next installment.
The world-building in this book is fantastic. Konstantin Zubov has created such a vibrant and immersive world, full of dungeons to explore, quests to complete, and enough magic and combat academies to keep any adventurer happy. Seriously, the sheer variety of activities and locations – from guild wars to tournaments – kept the story feeling fresh and exciting. I was constantly engaged, wondering what new challenge or opportunity would present itself to the protagonist next. The sheer scale of it all, from the bustling cities to the ominous orc hordes threatening the Empire, really captured my imagination.
The plot itself moves at a good pace. It's not so fast that things feel rushed, but not so slow that you lose interest. The author does a great job of balancing the character's personal growth and the larger conflicts facing the Empire. You really get invested in the protagonist’s journey, and you're constantly wondering where their choices will lead them. There’s a nice blend of high-stakes action and quieter moments that allow you to connect with the character on a deeper level.
Now, I did see some other reviews mentioning cliffhangers, and I have to admit, this one definitely ends on a bit of a nail-biter. While I personally appreciate a good cliffhanger to keep me wanting more, I can understand why some readers might find it frustrating. It's a bit of a double-edged sword, I suppose. It makes you instantly crave the next book, but it can also leave you feeling a little unsatisfied at the end of the current one.
That being said, I would argue that the cliffhanger is more a testament to the author’s skill in maintaining tension and building anticipation, rather than poor planning. The ending felt earned, and it set up the next book perfectly. It's certainly a compelling reason to dive right into Book 3!
Overall, I highly recommend The Last Portal Jumper (Book 2). The story is well-written, the pacing is excellent, and the world is incredibly engaging. If you're looking for a fun, action-packed LitRPG with a satisfying progression system, this is definitely worth adding to your reading list. Just be prepared to immediately want to start the next one – I know I am! The only minor drawback I'd mention is that a brief summary of the previous book's events would have been helpful for new readers, but it's not a deal breaker.
